To Tithe or Not to Tithe: Your Guide to Purposeful and Faithful Giving

Summary:
Have you ever been pressured to tithe? I see much need for clarification about tithing as it is taught today, and I get emails from listeners asking for clarity on the subject. Let’s see what the Word of God tells us about tithing and how we should give. We may find it is somewhat different from what is taught in many churches today.

The Unlock the Bible Now ministry provides weekly Sunday Bible Studies to help you understand God's word and unlock the secrets found in the Bible.

Notes:
Tithes: מַעֲשֵׂר maʿăśēr (mah-as-ayr’) - tithe, tenth part, payment of a tenth part

The word TITHE is only used four times in the New Testament, three are in a negative context, the fourth is connected to Abraham tithing to Melchizedek (Hebrews 7). This is another illustration of our giving being apart from the law. The Lord seeks our willingness to obey from the heart.

Scriptures:
All Scripture references are from the King James Version of the Bible.

Genesis 14:18-20, Hebrews 7:5-10, Numbers 18:20-21, Malachi 3:8-10, Luke 18:10-14, Matthew 23:23, Luke 11:42, Romans 7:4, Romans 6:14-15, Galatians 6:6-10, 1 Corinthians 16:1-4, 2 Corinthians 9:1-6, Romans 15:26-27, 2 Corinthians 9:7-16, 2 Corinthians 8:8-15, Philippians 4:15-20

Takeaway:
Yes, we should give to the Lord to appreciate what we are taught in the Word. It is fruit to your account and a sweet smell of obedience to the Lord. No, we are not under a law commandment to tithe; that is for Israel. We are, however, instructed to give as we purpose in our hearts. And the Lord loves a cheerful giver! Please make sure to give before there is a necessity; determine what you can do, and do it. Don't burden yourself to provide what you don't have; do what you do purposefully and consistently, no matter how little. The Lord will honor your faithfulness!
