Today, we begin shaping the backyard of our 2001 Fleetwood mobile home, which we are remodeling. Currently, the chickens roam the entire yard behind the house. We want to reclaim the lower portion of the chicken yard for herb and annual gardening. This is not an ideal location for a garden. The hillside is approximately a 40-degree slope with exposed rock ledges. That angel and the hill's height mean that torrents of water rush down the slope to slam into the back of the house. The current ditch is about 6 inches across and insufficient to move that much water. Today, we started the project to replace the ditch with a meandering stream bed. And like any other homestead day, we have work to do in the garden, chickens to tend to, and a full day of building systems of self-sufficiency.
