Liver fibrosis refers to the scarring and accumulation of fibrous tissue in the liver. It is a response to chronic liver injury or inflammation, often caused by conditions such as viral hepatitis, alcoholic liver disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), autoimmune liver diseases, or certain genetic disorders. When the liver is injured, it attempts to repair itself by producing collagen, a type of protein that forms scar tissue. Over time, repeated or continuous liver injury leads to the accumulation of excess collagen, resulting in fibrosis. The severity of fibrosis can range from mild, where only small areas of scarring are present, to severe, where extensive scarring disrupts the liver's normal structure and function.

Liver fibrosis is a progressive condition that can lead to cirrhosis if left untreated. Cirrhosis is characterized by extensive and irreversible scarring, causing liver dysfunction and impaired blood flow through the liver. It can also increase the risk of complications such as portal hypertension (high blood pressure in the liver), liver failure, and hepatocellular carcinoma (liver cancer). Detecting and monitoring liver fibrosis is crucial for managing liver diseases. Various diagnostic methods, including liver biopsy, imaging techniques (such as FibroScan, ultrasound, or MRI), and blood tests, are used to assess the degree of fibrosis and guide treatment decisions. Early detection and intervention can help prevent the progression and Reverse it.
