1 Corinthians - Chapter 5 Summary:

1 Corinthians chapter 5 addresses a case of sexual immorality within the Corinthian church and the need for church discipline. Paul rebukes the Corinthians for tolerating a situation where a man is living with his father's wife, something even pagans would condemn. He criticizes their arrogance and instructs them to mourn over the sin instead. Paul commands the church to remove the offender from their fellowship to preserve the purity of the community and to hopefully lead the sinner to repentance. He uses the analogy of leaven (yeast) spreading through dough to illustrate how unchecked sin can corrupt the entire church. Paul reminds them of their identity as unleavened bread, cleansed by Christ, the Passover lamb. He clarifies that his directive to avoid associating with immoral people refers to those within the church who persist in sin, not to the people of the world, emphasizing the need for internal discipline. This chapter underscores the necessity of addressing sin within the church to maintain its holiness and integrity.
