“Tomb Raider” (2013) is an action-adventure game developed by Crystal Dynamics and published by Square Enix’s European branch. It serves as the tenth main entry and a reboot of the “Tomb Raider” series, marking the beginning of the Survivor trilogy that reconstructs the origins of the iconic character Lara Croft.

The game is set on the mysterious island of Yamatai, where Lara Croft, still untested and not yet the battle-hardened explorer she is known to be, must save her friends and escape while being hunted by a malevolent cult. The gameplay focuses on survival, with elements of exploration and action as players traverse the island and visit various optional tombs. It’s notable for being the first game in the main series to include a multiplayer mode.

Upon its release, “Tomb Raider” received critical acclaim for its graphics, gameplay, and the character development of Lara Croft, with Camilla Luddington’s performance as Lara being particularly praised. However, the addition of the multiplayer mode received mixed reviews. The game has sold over 14.5 million units, making it the best-selling title in the “Tomb Raider” series as of October 202. A remastered version, “Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition,” was released for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in January 2014, and for Windows in April 2024, featuring improved graphics and downloadable content. The success of this game led to the development of sequels, “Rise of the Tomb Raider” and “Shadow of the Tomb Raider,” released in November 2015 and September 2018, respectively.
