The Elk Tag, Montana Big Game Combo

While in Graduate school Amanda held a Wyoming elk tag, but was never able to get out and pursue them. It was high time to get her into the field with an elk tag in her pocket. She applied for a general big game combo tag in Montana so she could finally try to fill an elk tag. Having worked in central Montana for the better part of a decade, and with friends who still hunt the area on a daily basis we began to form a plan. I contacted my friend and former co-worker Mike to talk drainages and elk movement. After drawing the tag we planned a summer vacation visiting friends and family and scouting likely drainages to pursue elk and to get her aquatinted with the terrain. Amanda's schedule demanding schedule dictated that her hunt would begin on Halloween. We packed up the truck, and with two tags burning a hole in her pocket, he made the 25 hour drive to Montana.
