The political leader of Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh, has been assassinated in Iran.

He was in Tehran to attend the inaugaration of President Masoud Pezeshkian on Tuesday.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas

has released a statement condemning the assassination as a cowardly act and a dangerous development.

He also called on Palestinians to unite.

Mustafa Barghouti, a Palestinian politician and the secretary-general of the Palestinian National Initiative, said Haniyeh's assassination marks a "grave development" that could spark a regional war.
