Vinyl version:
Klaus Schulze (1947) is a German keyboardist who invented cosmic music with Tangerine Dream and then became its most typical exponent in the 1970s. He was one of the foremost pioneers of popular electronic music, forerunner of dozens of styles that would take hold in rock music over the next 30 years. From the organ openings of Bach, the stanzas of Tibetan monks, the polyphonic architectures of Wagner, the cosmic psychedelia of Pink Floyd, the Gregorian liturgy, and the metaphysical vortices of John Coltrane, Schulze chiseled the first aesthetics of popular electronic music, an aesthetic that inherited from the raga a sense of tempo, from jazz a spontaneity, and from the late symphonists a vice of grandeur.

Over the course of his prolific career, Schulze personified the merits and flaws of "kosmische musik": metaphysical afflatus and soundtrack sensationalism, majestic and elegant slowness and cold and naive redundancy, fluid electronic improvisation and boundless paranoia. With him, the cathedral organ, the synthetic rhythms, the synth timbres, the half-hour-plus suite become no longer avant-garde experiments but consumer stereotypes.

After lending himself as a percussionist for the early works of Tangerine Dream (alongside Edgar Froese and Conrad Schnitzler) and Ash Ra Tempel (with Manuel Gottsching), in 1972, bolstered by his background in classical (Bach and Wagner) and contemporary (Ligeti and continuums, Stockhausen and electronics), he began a solo career that would lead him to found a new genre of synthetic symphonism based on the availability of increasingly sophisticated electronic machinery.
