DPRK state media has shown Kim Jong-un inspecting the country’s flood damaged areas by boat, after heavy rains caused chaos in the north-west. Kim was accompanied by Premier Kim Tok-hun, top aide Jo Yong-won, and bizarrely, a pack of cigarettes and an ashtray.

According to state-run KCNA, around 4,100 homes have been damaged following the torrential rains, as well as public buildings, roads and railways, while over 7,000 acres of farmland have been flooded.

In a meeting following the inspection, Kim ordered flood victims to be given disaster relief supplies, and asked authorities to ‘strictly punish’ those officials responsible for flood prevention.
