Ngaben is a significant funeral ritual in Balinese Hindu culture, conducted to return the physical body to the elements through cremation. This ceremony, part of the Pitra Yadnya rituals, is intended to release the soul and help it transition to the next life.

Mass Ngaben, or Ngaben Massal, is a collective form of this ceremony where multiple families perform the cremation together. This practice promotes community cooperation and reduces individual expenses, as conducting a single Ngaben can be very costly. During the mass ceremony, preserved bodies are cremated simultaneously at a predetermined time.

Ngaben ceremonies are categorized into several types:

Ngaben Sawa Wedana: Performed immediately after death.
Ngaben Asti Wedana: Conducted after the body, previously buried, is exhumed for cremation.
Ngaben Swasta: For bodies that are lost or not found.
An example of mass Ngaben took place in Legian, Badung in October 2023, where 111 bodies were cremated together[6]. Such events are often held in large areas like beaches to accommodate the large-scale cremation
