I Saw Her Standing There (Beatles, The, 1964; Tiffany, 1988). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2024-07-28. "Keeping the Oldies & Classics Alive"

"I Saw Her Standing There," written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, was the Beatles' third release in the USA climbing to the no. 14 position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1964 (Whitburn, 2013). It was the "B" Side of their no. 1 hit "I Want To Hold Your Hand". Tiffany had a hit with the song in 1988 "I Saw [Him] Standing There;" her version rose to the no. 7 position on the Billboard chart (Whitburn, 2013). Skipping school in September of 1962, McCartney wrote the majority of the song. Originally, he penned the lyric "She was just 17, she'd never been a beauty queen" but both Lennon and McCartney eventually didn't care for the phrase, so they changed it to "she was just 17, you know what I mean;" they felt original line was "corny and . . . it suggested that the woman wasn't beautiful, which wasn't the song's intent . . . [McCartney had] been thinking of beauty pageants held at Butlin's camps, which are oceanfront . . . resorts in the United Kingdom" (songfacts, 2024).

Lyrics:

One, two, three, four

Well, she was just seventeen
You know what I mean
And the way she looked
Was way beyond compare
So how could I dance with another
Ooh, when I saw her standing there?

Well, she looked at me
And I, I could see
That before too long
I'd fall in love with her
She wouldn't dance with another
Ooh, when I saw her standing there

Well, my heart went, "Boom"
When I crossed that room
And I held her hand in mine

Oh, we danced through the night
And we held each other tight
And before too long
I fell in love with her
Now I'll never dance with another
Ooh, since I saw her standing there

Well, my heart went, "Boom"
When I crossed that room
And I held her hand in mine

Oh, we danced through the night
And we held each other tight
And before too long
I fell in love with her
Now I'll never dance with another
Ooh, since I saw her standing there
Whoa, since I saw her standing there
Yeah, well, since I saw her standing there
