Vince Vaughn looking serious as he stands among other men in True Detective
Bad Monkey seems like a series that utilizes Vaughn’s talents well.

Back in 2015, Vaughn appeared in True Detective season 2 as a gangster trying to go legit. It was a role that was highly anticipated, but, when the season debuted, Vaughn’s character came off as a bit too stiff and wooden, even forced. The second season of the Emmy-winning series is infamously considered the lesser of the four seasons, especially when it’s compared to the first, which remains acclaimed to this day.

In the years after, Vaughn starred in some roles that fully displayed his acting chops. One of those would be his dark turn in Brawl in Cell Block 99, where he plays a man in prison. Sporting a shaved head and a massive tattoo of a cross on the back of it, his character is forced to perform an assassination. Another one of his serious roles is from 2018’s neo-noir Dragged Across Concrete, where he plays a scandalized police officer.

Brawl in Cell Block 99 and Dragged Across Concrete are both written and directed by S. Craig Zahler.

Bad Monkey seems like a series that utilizes Vaughn’s talents well. In the trailer for this genre-bending murder mystery, there are a lot of moments that allow Vaughn to showcase his comedic chops, but the violent nature of the story might call for some darker scenes where he can play up his dramatic side. Whether or not this role pushes the boundaries of what Vaughn is capable of, the casting for Bad Monkey seems spot-on.

Bad Monkey premieres on Apple TV+ on August 14.
