The games are set in an open world and played from a third-person perspective. They revolve around the fictional millennia-old struggle between the Assassins, who fight for peace with free will, and the Templars, who desire peace through control. The series blends historical fiction, science fiction, and characters that are intertwined with real-world historical events and figures.

Gameplay typically involves a mix of combat, stealth, and exploration, with parkour elements used to navigate the environment. Players control a historical Assassin in the past while also playing as a modern-day character caught in the Assassin-Templar conflict.
