The Painter’s Viewfinder #226

Finding the optimal framing of scenes or setups for the picture you intend to paint is a basic necessity for all kinds of painters from still-life, to interior, to landscape, to portrait. This contains suggestions of both why and how Paul does that in his practice

QUESTION: I was very interested to hear of the prominent role of viewfinders in this discussion. Do you have any practical advice for making them such as what sizes/ratios to keep/carry on hand? Are there any practical tips on how to use a viewfinder (how to hold it consistently from look to look, whether to clipping it to something, etc)?
