UN officials say the lack of local law enforcement and basic supplies is leading to rampant looting, unlawful killings, and shootings. According to the Hamas-led Health Ministry in Gaza, the Israeli military has killed 39,100 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip since the October 7 terrorist attacks. Israeli troops have been deployed to Khan Younis in the southern part of the Gaza Strip as part of a week-long operation involving airstrikes, which the IDF says is meant to drive out Hamas militants.
