The Grey Wagtail is a pretty little bird you might spot near streams and rivers in the UK. It's got a long tail that's always bobbing up and down - that's why it's called a wagtail! These birds are mostly grey on top, with a bright yellow belly that stands out. They're about the size of a sparrow, but with a much longer tail.
Grey Wagtails love to eat insects, which they catch by darting about on riverbanks or even in shallow water. They're really good at balancing on slippery rocks! In the spring and summer, you'll find them all over Britain, but some head south for the winter.
These clever birds build their nests in holes or crevices near water, often under bridges or in walls. They lay about 3-6 eggs at a time. Sadly, Grey Wagtails are on the UK's Red List of birds that need protection. This is mainly because there aren't as many of them as there used to be. But if you're near a stream or river, keep your eyes peeled - you might just spot one of these charming birds!
