"If I were you, I wouldn't get hurt even more..." Neon has unveiled a second official trailer for Cuckoo, the chilling German horror film arriving in theaters soon. It first premiered at the 2024 Berlin Film Festival and also played at SXSW earlier this year. Cuckoo is the second feature from German filmmaker Tilman Singer after Luz. Gretchen travels to the German Alps with her father & stepmother, where she comes across dark secrets. She hears strange noises and is plagued by visions of a weird woman chasing after her, drawn into a conspiracy involving bizarre experiments by the resort’s owner that echoes back generations... Following his festival hit Luz, Singer has once again succeeded in creating an atmospheric & visually outstanding horror trip. Shot on 35mm, this film stars Euphoria's Hunter Schafer alongside a brilliant and terrifying Dan Stevens in it. It also features Jessica Henwick, Marton Csókás, Jan Bluthardt, Greta Fernández, Konrad Singer, Àstrid Bergès-Frisbey, & Proschat Madani. I am a BIG fan of this original horror (read my review) - it's an eerie, strange freaky blast, with a fun dash of humor thrown in to shake things up.

Reluctantly, 17-year-old Gretchen leaves her American home to live with her father, who has just moved into a resort in the German Alps with his new family. Arriving at their future residence, they are greeted by Mr. König, her father's boss, who takes an inexplicable interest in Gretchen's mute half-sister Alma. Something doesn't seem right in this tranquil vacation paradise. Gretchen is plagued by strange noises and bloody visions until she discovers a shocking secret that also concerns her own family. Cuckoo is both written and directed by German genre filmmaker Tilman Singer, making their second feature film after directing Luz previously, plus a few other shorts. It's produced by Markus Halberschmidt, Josh Rosenbaum, Maria Tsigka, Ken Kao, and Thor Bradwell. It just premiered at the 2024 Berlin Film Festival (my review). “Euphoria” breakout Hunter Schafer is playing yet another teen trying to outrun her familial drama, except this time, it’s a surreal matter of life or death. Schafer leads “Cuckoo,” written and directed by “Luz” filmmaker Tilman Singer.

Six years after Singer’s 2018 feature debut, “Cuckoo” centers on 17-year-old Gretchen (Schafer) who is forced to leave her American home to live with her father (Márton Csókás) in a resort in the German Alps with his new wife (Jessica Henwick) and family. Yet it’s her father’s boss Mr. Konig (Dan Stevens) and his obsession with Gretchen’s mute half-sister Alma (Mila Lieu) that unlocks a larger, more sinister presence at the resort. Gretchen becomes haunted by strange noises and bloody visions until she discovers a shocking secret that also concerns her own family. Jan Bluthardt and Greta Fernandez also star in the horror film.

“Cuckoo” was shot on 35mm and premiered at the 2024 Berlin International Film Festival and had its North American premiere at the 2024 SXSW Film & TV Festival. The Neon feature is produced by Markus Halberschmidt, Josh Rosenbaum, Maria Tsigka, Ken Kao, Thor Bradwell, and Ben Rimmer.

Boutique studio Neon recently inked a strategic financial partnership with “Cuckoo” producer Kao’s Waypoint Entertainment in March 2024. The upcoming films as part of the deal are slated to be indies in the $10 million budget range, a type of film that “often gets overlooked by studios and streamers,” according to Kao. “Cuckoo” is the first film collaboration between Neon and Waypoint.

Schafer will next appear in Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Kinds of Kindness” and David Lowery’s “Mother Mary,” which co-stars Anne Hathaway, Michaela Coel, Kaia Gerber, and Jessica Brown-Findlay. Schafer told IndieWire that audiences will be “mind-blown” at “Mother Mary” which follows a pop star (Hathaway) who has a twisted romantic relationship with a fashion designer (Coel).

Schafer plays Hilda, the personal assistant to Coel’s co-lead character. The film is slated to be a epic pop melodrama and features original songs by Jack Antonoff and Charli XCX. “It was a lot of fun and I think people are going to be mind-blown,” Schafer told IndieWire of the A24 film. “I was mind-blown.”

“Cuckoo” hits theaters on Friday, August 9. Check out the film’s first trailer below.
Cuckoo's new trailer showcases the eerie relationship between Gretchen and the mysterious Hooded Woman.
Hunter Schafer's performance in Cuckoo will take her into a different tone from her Euphoria role.
Director Tilman Singer brings the chilling world of Cuckoo to life, promising a terrifying experience for viewers.
A new trailer for Cuckoo has been released by NEON, and the upcoming thriller promises to keep audiences on the edge of their seats. The movie written and directed by Tilman Singer will follow the story of Gretchen (Hunter Schafer) as she moves to a new home. The uncertainty regarding her future only grows as soon as she notices that a strange man is obsessed with her half-sister. With the clock running against her, the protagonist of the story will have to do everything in her power to keep herself and her half-sister safe.

The new trailer for Cuckoo focuses on the horrifying aspects of the upcoming narrative. The premise in the new trailer is presented in a way that highlights the relationship between Gretchen and the Hooded Woman (Kalin Morrow). The strange entity seems to appear wherever the young girl goes. The upcoming film will also feature performances from Jessica Henwick and Dan Stevens, but the Hooded Woman's presence will be what defines Gretchen's fate when all is said and done. Cuckoo held its world premiere during this year's edition of the Berlin International Film Festival, and it will make its way to theaters in the United States on August 9.

Hunter Schafer is known for portraying Jules Vaughn in Euphoria, but her performance in Cuckoo will allow her to explore a very different tone than the one seen in the successful HBO teen drama. Through Kinds of Kindness and The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, Schafer has taken on a wide variety of roles that don't resemble one another. And the trend will continue once Cuckoo hits the big screen. The upcoming horror thriller will also allow Dan Stevens to expand upon the best year of his career, after starring in titles such as Godzilla x Kong: A New Empire and Abigail.

The Director Behind 'Cuckoo'
The horror of Cuckoo doesn't come to life without Tilman Singer. The filmmaker both wrote and directed the movie, which is set to take Gretchen through a living hell worthy of the industry's most legendary scream queens. Before diving deep into the world of Cuckoo, Singer worked on a couple of short films that would pave the way for his transition to the big leagues. The upcoming thriller is also a part of NEON's strong slate for the remainder of the year, which includes the current Palme d'Or winner, Anora.

You can check out the new trailer for Cuckoo above, before the movie premieres in theaters in the United States on August 9.
