Cube Steak and Gravy
Cube Steak and Gravy that's perfect for a comforting meal:
Ingredients
For the Cube Steaks:
4 cube steaks
Salt and pepper, to taste
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon paprika
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
For the Gravy:
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
2 cups beef broth
1 cup milk
Salt and pepper, to taste
Optional: 1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
Instructions
Prepare the Cube Steaks:
Season the cube steaks with salt and pepper on both sides.
In a shallow dish, combine 1 cup of flour, garlic powder, onion powder, and paprika.
Dredge the cube steaks in the flour mixture, ensuring they are well-coated.
Cook the Cube Steaks:
In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat.
Add the cube steaks to the skillet and cook until browned on both sides, about 3-4 minutes per side. You may need to do this in batches to avoid overcrowding the skillet.
Remove the cooked cube steaks from the skillet and set aside.
Make the Gravy:
In the same skillet, add the 1/4 cup of flour to the remaining oil and drippings. Stir well to combine and cook for about 1-2 minutes to get rid of the raw flour taste.
Gradually whisk in the beef broth, ensuring there are no lumps.
Slowly add the milk, continuing to whisk until the gravy is smooth.
Bring the gravy to a simmer and cook until it thickens, about 5-7 minutes. If the gravy becomes too thick, you can add a little more broth or milk to reach your desired consistency.
Season with salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce (if using).
Combine and Serve:
Return the cube steaks to the skillet, nestling them into the gravy.
Simmer for an additional 5 minutes, allowing the cube steaks to absorb some of the gravy flavors.
Serve the cube steaks with gravy over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles.
Tips
Tenderizing: If your cube steaks are particularly tough, you can tenderize them further by pounding them gently with a meat mallet before dredging in flour.
Onions and Mushrooms: For added flavor, sauté some sliced onions and mushrooms in the skillet before making the gravy. Remove them before adding the flour and return them to the gravy along with the cube steaks.
Herbs: Fresh or dried herbs like thyme or parsley can add a lovely aroma and taste to the gravy.
