The Grey Plover is a shorebird you might spot on UK beaches. About pigeon-sized, they're black-and-white in summer but turn grey in winter. These clever birds have short beaks and legs for hunting on beaches and mudflats. They even stamp their feet to make worms surface!
Grey Plovers breed in the Arctic but fly south for winter, with many ending up on British coasts. They're tough travellers, flying thousands of miles yearly. These birds can live up to 15 years, which is quite old for their size. Sadly, they're struggling due to habitat loss, but conservation efforts are helping protect their resting and feeding spots.
