In today's society, police must know how to evaluate a psych patient during any encounter with a criminal. They need to assess if a person is mentally stable. Sonja Massey provided many examples of someone who was not stable. So why did the officer who fired the first shots in this case, after asking her two to three times and giving her three to four hints that he knew she was not mentally stable, proceed to use lethal force?
