St. Paul the Hermit, also known as Paul of Thebes, is considered the first Christian hermit. His life is primarily known through the writings of St. Jerome in "The Life of Paulus the First Hermit."

Early Life
Birth: Paul was born around 227 AD in Thebes, Egypt.
Family: He came from a wealthy and noble family.
Education: He received a good education and was well-versed in Greek and Egyptian languages.
Becoming a Hermit
Persecution: During the persecution of Christians under the Roman Emperor Decius around 250 AD, Paul fled to the desert to escape.
Solitary Life: He found a cave in the desert, where he decided to live a life of prayer and penance. He remained there for the rest of his life, around 90 years.
Daily Life: Paul led a life of strict asceticism, surviving on dates from a nearby palm tree and water from a spring. According to legend, a raven brought him half a loaf of bread daily.
Meeting with St. Anthony
St. Anthony's Visit: Near the end of his life, Paul was visited by St. Anthony the Great, another early Christian hermit. According to St. Jerome, Anthony was directed by a vision to visit Paul.
Conversation: The two hermits had a deep spiritual conversation. Paul revealed to Anthony that he had been living in the desert longer than Anthony, who is often regarded as the father of monasticism.
Death and Legacy
Death: Paul died around 341 AD at the age of 113. St. Anthony is said to have buried him with the assistance of two lions who dug the grave.
