KEVIN AYERS: MOONLIGHT'S LOST DISCIPLE

This a profile on Kevin Ayers, a hugely talented songwriter who emerged from the "Canterbury Scene" of the the late 1960s with the pioneering psychedelic band The Soft Machine. Ayers struck out on his own idiosyncratic career from 1969 until his death in 2013. It has been suggested that Ayers never fulfilled his potential. That might be very true commercially but artistically his output is arguably as good as any other solo UK artist of the post-Beatles, pre-punk era of UK pop/rock music. Amongst the art-rock tomfoolery of wine, women and bananas (?), there is an honesty in his songwriting, where many of his ilk were more content to hide behind various personas and constructs. Enjoy.
