John the Baptist’s Ministry and His Baptism of Jesus (Matthew 3)

Matthew 2 concluded with Joseph, Mary, and Jesus returning from exile in Egypt to Nazareth (Matthew 2:22-23). Matthew 3 opens with the phrase “In those days” (Matthew 3:1), and the setting is 30 years later, at the beginning of Christ’s public ministry.
