My name is Jan Rodrigues, and I am here to share the tale of my life, a journey that took me from the shores of Africa to the bustling streets of Manhattan Island.

I was born in the early 1600s, and my life began in the complex world of the Atlantic, where people of different cultures, languages, and backgrounds often met. I was of African and possibly Portuguese descent, which gave me a unique perspective and set of skills that would serve me well in my future endeavors.

In 1613, I found myself working for the Dutch as a sailor and trader. My journey with the Dutch led me to a place called Mannahatta, an island teeming with promise and opportunity. The Dutch West India Company, eager to establish trade relations and a foothold in the New World, saw my potential as an intermediary with the local Native American tribes.

I was left on Manhattan Island to learn the language and customs of the Lenape people. It was a daunting task, but one that I embraced with determination. The Lenape were a sophisticated society, rich in culture and tradition. I built relationships, traded goods, and learned their ways, becoming a vital link between the Dutch and the Lenape.

My time on the island was marked by challenges and triumphs. I navigated the complexities of cross-cultural interactions, often serving as a mediator in negotiations and conflicts.
