We speak to Daan de la Rey whose military career began in 1969 during his military service at the Army Gymnasium. He was placed as a Reserve Force Officer at 2 Regiment Bloemspruit at the end of his service. In 1977 he joined short service and served with 32 Battalion until the end of 1978. During his service, he took part in several operations, including Operation Reindeer, during which he was wounded by artillery fire. He served at the Military Intelligence Division, Directorate of Special Tasks as a training commander for UNITA in Angola. In February 1981, he was seriously injured during a landmine explosion, which resulted in the loss of his hands/arms as well as injuries to his hearing and his sight. He was the first Permanent Force member to be retained in service after being declared 100% medically unfit. From 1988 to 1991 he was part of several projects, including Project CURAMUS which investigated members who had acquired disabilities during military service.
In 1990 he left the Military Service and was appointed as a public servant in the Department of Defence as Deputy Director with policy responsibility for civilian training and development, a position he held until his retirement in November 2014. During his career he received, among other things, the Southern Cross Decoration and the Order of Good Hope. He is married to Gretha and is blessed with four children and three grandchildren.
