Ludwig Van Beethoven (1780-1827) was born in Bonn Germany. At the age of 22 he moved to Vienna, the music capital of Europe.

He was a prodigious composer and virtuoso pianist. He composed works in many of the genres of Classical music, including symphonies, concertos, string quartets, piano sonatas and opera. His later works
began to be associated with the Romantic style.

Beethoven composed nine symphonies. Symphony No. 5 was composed between 1804 and 1808 among a number of other works at the time. Syphony No. 5 represents Beethoven's fully developed personally expressive style.
This type of musical style became popular in the Romantic era and was a total break from the prior Classical style.

Symphony No. 5 contrasts music in the key of C Minor with music in the key of C Major to evoke the dramatic struggle between light and dark and hope and despair.
The Symphony has become a cultural icon with it's beginning "fate motive" short-short-short-long musical sequence.
