Greater Manchester Police are facing backlash after footage emerged of an officer kicking a detained man in the face then stamping on his head, during an arrest at the city’s airport on Tuesday. Footage shows the man, believed to be a holidaymaker, lying on the ground with his arms by his sides, when he is assaulted by the officer. A taser is also deployed on the man. The same officer then knocked another man to the ground, again appearing to hit and kick him.

The eyewitness who filmed the incident told reporters, ‘I was just gobsmacked. The police just kicked the guy in the face. Everyone was worried about themselves, they started panicking and rushing away, they feared they would be attacked.’

According to a police statement, the armed officers had responded to an alleged altercation, and the ensuing confrontation resulted in the officers being assaulted, one left with a broken nose. They also reportedly feared their weapons would be taken and used against them by the detainees.

Following the incident, hundreds of protesters gathered outside the police station where the detained men were taken, calling for Greater Manchester Police to be held accountable. The force has now referred itself to the independent police watchdog over the incident and one officer has been taken off active duty, but has not been suspended.
