A gunman entered a nursing home in northwestern Croatia on Monday, fatally shooting five people — including his mother — and injuring six others, a government minister said. One of the wounded later died in the hospital, taking the death toll to six, while four remain in critical condition.

“An unprecedented tragedy has happened to us. We are all in shock,” Bjelovar-Bilogora county prefect Marko Marusic said. “An investigation is ongoing. The police are doing their work, and the remaining wounded have been transferred to the hospital. We hope they will recover, and we will do everything we can to help.”

Meanwhile, local resident Zlatko recounted that others have described the gunman as a 51-year-old retired veteran who was aggressive, had PTSD, and was drinking alcohol. Zlatko added that “Reportedly, his mum was here, and he came to kill her. Likely, others were in his way. It is unfortunate. What can you say?"

Authorities have given no motive for the attack, but local news reported that the killer fled the scene but was later arrested by the police.
