AMSTERDAM

In the port of Amsterdam
There are sailors who sing
Of the haunting dreams they have
Away at sea from Amsterdam.
In the port of Amsterdam
There are sailors who sleep
Stretched out like tired flags
Along the water deep.
In the port of Amsterdam
There are sailors who die
Full of beer and tragedy
When the dawn lights the sky.
But in the port of Amsterdam
There are sailors being born
In the sultry heat
Of oceans so forlorn...

In the port of Amsterdam
There are sailors who eat
On the white cloth tables where they seat
Heads and tails of gleaming fish,
And they show their teeth
Made to bite into fate
And to unhook the moon
And bite into ropes and sails,
And there's a taste of cod
Even in the heart of French fries
For which with their arms held high
They always call for more.
Then they get up and laugh and holler
Like a storm ripping the sky,
And as they zip up their flies
They walk out belching and rough.

In the port of Amsterdam
There are sailors who go dancing,
Rubbing their bellies against the bellies
Of the women they fancy.
And they dance and spin
Like a spitting sun
In the torn-up sound
Of an accordion's dying song.
They twist their necks
To hear themselves laugh but instead
All of a sudden,
The accordion has gone dead,
And so, like a bunch of loons,
With grave gestures and fiery glance,
They bring out their Batavian soul
In the light of the full moon.

In the port of Amsterdam
There are sailors who get drunk
And they drink all night long
And then drink more and more.
They drink a toast
To the whores of Amsterdam,
To those of Hamburg and elsewhere,
They drink to women everywhere,
Who give them their chastity,
Who give them their modesty,
For a little money
Until when they are truly drunk,
With their noses up, they stand up straight
And blow their noses in the stars above
And piss like one who weeps
Over an unfaithful love...

In the port of Amsterdam,
In the port of Amsterdam...
