Deputy Charged With Murder After Shooting a Woman Holding Boiling Water Pot. Sonya Massey.

The Illinois State Police released body camera of an officer-involved
shooting of Sonya Massey, age 36 on July 6, 2024.

On July 6, 2024, at approximately 12:50 a.m., Sangamon County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a 911 call of a woman who reported a suspected prowler outside her house in the 2800 block of Hoover Avenue in Springfield. Former Sangamon County Deputy Sean Grayson and another deputy made contact with the caller, Sonya Massey, at her residence.

During the interaction inside the home of Ms. Massey,
Deputy Grayson notices a pot on the stove and allowed Massey to move it, saying "we don't need a fire in the house."

Massey turned off the flame on the stove and picked up the pot.

"Where are you going?" Massey says.

"Away from your hot, steaming water," Grayson respond.

"Away from my hot steaming water?"
"I rebuke you in the name of Jesus. I rebuke you in the name of Jesus." Massey says

"You'd better f***ing not. I swear to God, I'll f***ing shoot you right in your f***ing face," Grayson says.

After Deputy Grayson discharged his firearm striking Ms. Massey and killing her.
The Illinois State Police were contacted to conduct an
independent investigation into the shooting.

On July 17, 2024 Sangamon County Sheriff's Deputy Sean Grayson was indicted by a Sangamon County Grand Jury and was arrested later that day for 3 counts of First Degree Murder, 1 count of Official Misconduct, and 1 count of Aggravated Battery with a Firearm.

Deputy Sean Grayson has pleaded not guilty to charges of first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm and official misconduct. He is being held in the Sangamon County Jail while he awaits trial.

Massey's daughter confirmed he mother was diagnosed paranoid-schizophrenic.
