Secret Service Director resigns

U.S. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle resigned on Tuesday following intense criticism over the agency’s failure to prevent an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump at a Pennsylvania rally.

Despite defending her qualifications at a House committee hearing, Cheatle faced backlash for refusing to address security lapses that allowed a gunman to target Trump.

Cheatle’s resignation letter acknowledged the agency’s failure on July 13 and her responsibility.

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas appointed Deputy Director Ronald Rowe as acting director.

President Biden praised Cheatle’s service and promised to appoint a new director soon, CNBC has reported.
