Save Bangladesh student
Why this petition matters
Started by Sumon P
The students of Dhaka University, along with those from other public and private universities and colleges across Bangladesh, are the primary victims of the ongoing protests against the quota system. These students, including those in school uniforms, have been subjected to severe violence by government law enforcement agencies and the student wing of the ruling party. They have faced beatings, tear gas, rubber bullets, and attacks with sharp weapons, leading to numerous injuries and deaths. At least 64 students, including young children and university students, have been killed in these brutal assaults. Additionally, the government has shut down internet access and news channels, isolating the students from the outside world and making their plight even more dire.
What is at stake?
If the current situation remains unchanged, the systemic discrimination perpetuated by the 56% quota in governmental jobs and public universities will continue to stifle opportunities for many capable and talented individuals. This quota, particularly the 30% reserved for the descendants of the freedom fighters of 1971, limits access for students who excel based on intellect and ability. The continued enforcement of this system undermines meritocracy, perpetuates inequality, and potentially deprives the nation of its brightest minds. Conversely, addressing the issue could lead to a more equitable and just system, fostering an environment where opportunities are based solely on merit, benefiting both individuals and the country as a whole.
Why is now the time to act?
Immediate action is essential because the violent suppression of peaceful protests cannot be allowed to continue. The brutality experienced by the students, the unjust loss of lives, and the widespread public outcry underscore the urgency of the situation. The students' unwavering determination and the declaration of a "COMPLETE SHUTDOWN" reflect their desperate need for change and justice. The government's shutdown of nationwide internet and news channels further isolates the students and prevents their voices from being heard, highlighting the need for immediate international intervention. Acting now not only addresses the immediate human rights violations but also paves the way for systemic reforms that will benefit future generations. The momentum for change is strong, and seizing this moment can help create a fairer and more inclusive society. The Bangladeshis in the USA believe that your support can help effect positive change and secure a safer future for all Bangladeshi students suffering due to this brutality.
As members of the global student community, we believe that it is crucial to stay informed and support one another in pursuing justice and equality. As Bangladeshi students, we want to ensure that our voices, and yours, are heard worldwide. Therefore, we are launching this petition as a global protest against this oppression.
