According to the Qur’an, the Kaaba was built by Hazrat Ibrahim (AS) and his son Hazrat Ismail (AS) on Allah’s instructions and it served as the first house of worship for mankind. It is believed that during the construction of the Kaaba, the angel Jibreel (AS) brought Ibrahim the Black Stone for Kaaba, which he placed in the Kaaba’s eastern corner. The Black Stone of Kaaba is believed to be one of the original structure’s only remnants built by Ibrahim since the remaining structure was demolished and rebuilt many times for maintenance over the history of Kaaba.
We Muslims believe Bayt al-Ma’mur is an exact of the Holy Kaaba outside the realms of human existence. It is located directly above the same Kaaba in the 7th heaven. Like humans, Angels perform Tawaaf around Bayt al-Ma’mur.
Bayt al-Ma’mur, also called the “Frequent House,” is an exact replica of the Kaaba outside the realms of human existence. It is located directly above the Kaaba in the seventh heaven. Directly above the Bayt al-Ma’mur is the throne of Allah (swt).
70,000 Angels visit Bayt al-Ma’mur to worship & pray every single day, who never return. Bayt al-Ma’mur is welcomed by a new legion of 70,000 Angels everyday, which puts into perspective the massive number of the Angelic population that exists compared to humans on earth.
The Angels come to Bayt al-Ma’mur to offer their salah (prayer) and once they are done, they leave to never return. They are then followed by another group of 70,000 angels who pray and leave; this cycle will continue until the Day or Resurrection.
Allah (swt) mentions Bayt al-Ma’mur in Surah at-Tur verse 4. He (swt) says,
“And by the Bayt al-Ma’mur (the house over the heavens identical to the Kabah at Makkah, continuously visited by the angels)”
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said in the hadith of the Miraj (Night Journey) after he visited the 7th Heaven:
"I was shown Bayt al-Ma’mur. I asked Angel Jibreel about it & he said,? This is Al Bayt al-Ma’mur where 70,000 angels perform prayers daily & when they leave, they never return to it (but always a fresh batch comes into it daily till the day of judgment)" [Sahih Bukhari]?
There are certain points on the Earth where Allah (swt)’s blessings are directed like a conduit, as the Kaaba is directly below Bayt al-Ma’mur (in the 7th Heaven) this is the main one.
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said that a prayer at the Kaaba is rewarded 100,000 times more than elsewhere in the world (except the Prophet’s (PBUH) masjid in Medina).
Kaaba is considered the holiest place on the Earth. There are several verses in the Quran about the revered Kaaba, where it is described as the first house of worship for mankind.
Once the Kaaba was constructed, Allah urged Ismail’s descendants to perform the annual pilgrimage of Hajj. Also, the area surrounding the shrine was transformed into a sanctuary where violence and bloodshed were forbidden. Originally, the Kaaba was constructed as a simple unroofed structure in a rectangular shape. The Quraysh tribe, which used to rule the pre-Islamic Mecca, rebuilt the Kaaba in 608 CE with wood and masonry blocks.
Before the Prophet: According to many historians, in the days before the rise of Islam, Mecca was a well-known centre of trade and the Kaaba served as a holy site for the various Bedouin tribes all across the Arabian Peninsula. Bedouin people used to go on a pilgrimage to Mecca once a year, where they worshipped their gods in the Kaaba. Statues of various Pagan deities including Hubal were placed in and around the Kaaba.
During the early phase of the Prophet’s era, the Kaaba was turned into the shrine of Allah, where people belonging to both Pagan and Christian tribes from the Arabian Peninsula visited every year to perform the Hajj pilgrimage. In 628 CE, the Prophet and some of his followers travelled to Mecca to perform Umrah only to be refused entry by the Arab inhabitants of Mecca. Prophet Muhammad managed to secure a peace treaty with them, obtaining permission for the Muslims to perform the pilgrimage at the Kaaba from next year onwards.
In 630 CE, after the inhabitants of Mecca violated the treaty, Prophet Muhammad conquered the holy city. After Muhammad’s victorious return, the Kaaba turned into the focal point of worship and pilgrimage amongst Muslims.
The Late History of Kaaba: After Prophet Muhammad’s death, the Kaaba has been reconstructed several times. In 683 CE, it was severely damaged in a fire during the first siege of Mecca that occurred in the war between Abdullah ibn al-Zubayr and the Umayyads. Abdullah rebuilt the Kaaba to include the Hat?m.
In 692 CE, the second siege of Mecca took place, where the Kaaba was bombarded with stones. The next year, Abd al-Malik razed the remnants of the Kaaba and rebuilt it in a cubical shape, similar to the way it was during the Prophet’s time.
In 1626, there was a flood that resulted in the walls of the Kaaba collapsing. During the same year, the holy mosque was renovated and the Kaaba was rebuilt with granite stones from Mecca. The Kaaba has stayed the same in appearance since then.
The last major modifications were carried out in the 1950s by the government of Saudi Arabia to accommodate the increasingly large number of pilgrims who come on the hajj. Today the mosque covers almost forty acres.
Today, the Kaaba is a cubical structure, unlike almost any other religious structure. It is fifteen meters tall and ten and a half meters on each side; its corners roughly align with the cardinal directions. The door of the Kaaba is now made of solid gold; it was added in 1982. The kiswa, a large cloth that covers the Kaaba, which used to be sent from Egypt with the hajj caravan, today is made in Saudi Arabia. Until the advent of modern transportation, all pilgrims undertook the often dangerous hajj, or pilgrimage, to Mecca in a large caravan across the desert, leaving from Damascus, Cairo, or other major cities in Arabia, Yemen or Iraq.
The numerous changes to the Kaaba and its associated mosque serve as good reminder of how often buildings, even sacred ones, were renovated and remodeled either due to damage or to the changing needs of the community.
Only Muslims may visit the holy cities of Mecca and Medina before but we heard and read news that now non-muslims also visting.
