The Illinois State Police made this footage available to the media Monday, July 22 regarding the officer-involved shooting death of Sonya Massey on July 6, 2024.

The footage was made public following ISP's consultation with Massey's family and made available by Sangamon County State's Attorney John Milheiser

In the early morning hours of July 6, 2024, Sangamon County deputies responded to a 911 call in the 2800 block of Hoover Avenue in Springfield.

Former Deputy Sean Grayson and another deputy made contact with the caller, found to be Sonya Massey, at her residence.

During the interaction inside Massey's home, Grayson discharged his firearm, striking Massey and killing her.

Following the incident, the Illinois State Police were contacted to conduct an independent investigation into the shooting.

The investigation revealed to the State's Attorney's office that the evidence didn't support a finding that Grayson was justified in using deadly force, and the case was presented before a Sangamon County grand jury.

On July 17, the grand jury returned a five-count indictment, including three counts of first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm, and official misconduct.

Later that day, Grayson was taken into custody as a result of an arrest warrant, and he remains in custody at the Sangamon County Jail.

The public release of the video is according to the Illinois Freedom of Information Act, in addition to the State's Attorney's office and the Illinois State Police's commitment to integrity and public transparency.

Some images may be too graphic for some audiences, so viewer discretion is advised.
