Victory in Jesus

A. David
1. David was a shepherd boy, praising the Lord
2. Considered to be “a man after God’s own heart” (1Sam13:14)
3. Lion and the Bear.
1 Samuel 17:34-36
34 But David said to Saul, “Your servant has been keeping his
father’s sheep. When a lion or a bear came and carried off a sheep
from the flock, 35 I went after it, struck it and rescued the sheep
from its mouth. When it turned on me, I seized it by its hair, struck
it and killed it. 36 Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear;
this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, because he
has defied the armies of the living God.

Psalm 144 1
Praise be to the LORD my Rock, who trains my hands for war, my
fingers for battle. He is my loving God and my fortress, my
stronghold and my deliverer, my shield, in whom I take refuge, who
subdues peoples under me. O LORD, what is man that you care for
him, the son of man that you think of him?
How do you like your job or present circumstances?
Are you currently facing a bear or a lion?
Phil 4:6-7
6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer
and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And
the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your
hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
David was anointed King yet stayed in his current situation tending sheep.
Eventually elevated to be the Harp player for the King. (1Sam 16:18-23)

Make sure you don’t give up on the promises of God even if the timing isn’t
what you think.
B. Goliath
1.Goliath aka the “Bronze Serpent”
2.Bronze armor, like scales. (1 Sam 17:4-7)
3. Bronze = Nehoshet
Serpent = Nehesh
C. Adam, Eve, and a Serpent
Gen 3:15
And I will put enmity
between you and the woman,
and between your of spring[a] and hers;
he will crush[b] your head,
and you will strike his heel.”
D. David V Goliath
1 Samuel 17: 41-51

41 Meanwhile, the Philistine, with his shield bearer in front of him, kept coming
closer to David. 42 He looked David over and saw that he was little more than a
boy, glowing with health and handsome, and he despised him. 43 He said to David,
“Am I a dog, that you come at me with sticks?” And the Philistine cursed David by
his gods. 44 “Come here,” he said, “and I’ll give your flesh to the birds and the
wild animals!” * Goliath didn't know David was King.
45 David said to the Philistine, “You come against me with sword and spear and
javelin, but I come against you in the name of the LORD Almighty, the God of the
armies of Israel, whom you have defied. 46 This day the LORD will deliver you into
my hands, and I’ll strike you down and cut off your head. This very day I will give
the carcasses of the Philistine army to the birds and the wild animals, and the
whole world will know that there is a God in Israel. 47 All those gathered here will

know that it is not by sword or spear that the LORD saves; for the battle is the
LORD’s, and he will give all of you into our hands.”
48 As the Philistine moved closer to attack him, David ran quickly toward the
battle line to meet him. 49 Reaching into his bag and taking out a stone, he slung it
and struck the Philistine on the forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he
fell facedown on the ground.
50 So David triumphed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone; without a
sword in his hand he struck down the Philistine and killed him.
51 David ran and stood over him. He took hold of the Philistine’s sword and drew
it from the sheath. After he killed him, he cut off his head with the sword.

E. David King
1. David was promised by God that his throne would be established forever
2 Sam7:11-16

11 and have done ever since the time I appointed leaders[a] over my people Israel.
I will also give you rest from all your enemies.
“‘The LORD declares to you that the LORD himself will establish a house for you: 12
When your days are over and you rest with your ancestors, I will raise up your
of spring to succeed you, your own flesh and blood, and I will establish his
kingdom. 13 He is the one who will build a house for my Name, and I will establish
the throne of his kingdom forever. 14 I will be his father, and he will be my son.
When he does wrong, I will punish him with a rod wielded by men, with floggings
inflicted by human hands. 15 But my love will never be taken away from him, as I
took it away from Saul, whom I removed from before you. 16 Your house and your
kingdom will endure forever before me[b]; your throne will be established
forever.’”
Matthew 1:1-17 the Genealogy of Jesus and the House of David
F. Jesus the “Son of Man”

Phil 2:1-11 Humility of Christ...

2 Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any
comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and
compassion, 2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same
love, being one in spirit and of one mind. 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or
vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to
your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.
5 In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:
6 Who, being in very nature[a] God,
did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;
7 rather, he made himself nothing
by taking the very nature[b] of a servant,
being made in human likeness.
8 And being found in appearance as a man,
he humbled himself
by becoming obedient to death—
even death on a cross!
9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place
and gave him the name that is above every name,
10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
11 and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.
Watch the words of your mouth.
John 12:49
49 For I did not speak on my own, but the Father who sent me commanded me to
say all that I have spoken.

Jesus was the son of man, word made flesh (John 1:14) he had needs of a man as far
as food and drink. He is understanding of our circumstances. I used to think that when
he was tempted in the desert by the devil that was it. But in Hebrews 4:12-16 it tells us
that the Word ( Jesus) is alive and able to convict us in our heart. That Jesus in the
flesh was able to overcome SIN and us, united with him, can do the same. Yet if we fail
we may go to him for forgiveness.
Hebrews 4:12-16
12 For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword,
it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the
thoughts and attitudes of the heart. 13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s
sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we
must give account.
Jesus the Great High Priest
14 Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven,[a]
Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. 15 For we do not
have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have
one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. 16 Let
us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive
mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

G. The law
1. Moses brought the law. What is Law?
Romans 3:20
20 Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God’s sight by the works of the
law; rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin.
2. Moses was not able to deliver the people into the Promised Land (Deut 3:23-29).
The law does not deliver us or bring us closer to God...Jesus does

John 14:6

6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the
Father except through me.
H. It is finished
1. Jesus was crucified at Calvary, the Place of the Skull also known as “Golgatha.”
Some believe that this is the location of the head of Goliath. Obviously due to the
sanctity of the location, no excavations have been done to see if it’s there. But
even so, the place of the Skull, the crushed head of the bronze serpent pretty
much puts the nail in the coffin.
2. If you feel lost or feel like or question whether God is there, even Jesus is noted
as saying in Matthew 27:45-46,

The Death of Jesus
45 From noon until three in the afternoon darkness came over all the land. 46
About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eli, Eli,[a] lema
sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken
me?”).[b]
3. Jesus paid it all! He conquered sin in the flesh and died as a lamb, a
perfect sacrifice on the cross. He is a High Priest that fulfilled the law,
able to empathize with us but not powerless to forgive or take away
our sins. The veil is torn and he conquered death and leads us to the
Promised land to be with His father in heaven! He is a King in the line
of David, enthroned Forever!
