Carrying a Torch GREATER THAN the Olympic Torch

As we anticipate the start of the upcoming Olympic Games, the infamous Olympic torch is making it's way to Paris in a relay... being passed from one person to the next. It is an honor to be selected as a torchbearer to carry the symbolic flame.

As Christians, we have the greater honor of carrying the torch for Christ as we are His torchbearers in this world. Jesus passed us the torch, the light, when he ascended up to the heavenly realms.

Jesus tells us in Matthew 5:14-16,
“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven."

Each one of us has been called to carry the light and display it for all the world to see. We are to shine the light of the Spirit, the light of God's word, the light of the Good News, the light of love, the light of good deeds, the light of hope, the light of our Savior.

Not only are we to display the light, we are also commissioned to pass it on from generation to generation, sharing the Gospel.

In Mark 16:15, Jesus tells his disciples,

“Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation."

His first disciples took on that commission... carrying the Good News of Christ and passing it on to others as they traveled and in their God-inspired writings. For thousands of years, the great commission has been in a relay from generation to generation. Now it is in our hands. Let us carry it with boldness and never let the flame go out.

We read Apostle Paul's encouraging words in 2 Timothy 1:6-8,
"I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline. So do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord."

As torchbearers for Christ, let us shine the light, hold it up high for all to see and glorify our Father in heaven as we await the return of Messiah, Jesus Christ, our Lord and King.
