"That's what this biz is all about - illusions." Vertical has unveiled the final official US trailer for the music biopic titled Girl You Know It's True, from German director Simon Verhoeven. It's about the infamous music duo known as Milli Vanilli, referencing one of their biggest tracks (Paramount+ also released their own official Milli Vanilli doc last year). This movie is a fictionalized biopic version of their story. Dancers Pilatus & Morvan rise to fame in the late 80s and become stars with No.1 hits, even winning a Grammy. This is the true story of Rob Pilatus & Fab Morvan, who conquered global music charts as the duo "Milli Vanilli." Their fame turned to infamy when it's revealed the iconic voices behind their hits were not their own, but those of other singers. Starring Tijan Njie as Rob & Elan Ben Ali as Fab, plus Matthias Schweighöfer as their sketchy record producer Frank Farian. This is a German movie because Rob and Fab met and lived in Munich, and their "Milli Vanilli" fame started in Munich in the 80s with Farian. This was already released in Germany (and Europe) last year, and it will finally be getting a US release in early August. Check this out.

Milli Vanilli, consisting of German Rob Pilatus (Tijan Njie) & French Fab Morvan (Elan Ben Ali), became a music phenomenon in the late 1980s and early 1990s. With songs like "Girl You Know It's True" and "I'm Gonna Miss You," they stormed the charts around the world. Fab and Rob seemed to have a great career ahead of them - until it finally came out that they didn't sing any of their songs themselves. What followed was one of the biggest crashes in music history. Fab and Rob had to give up their Grammy, the buyers of their albums were awarded compensation and it was over with Milli Vanilli. Girl You Know It's True is directed by German actor / filmmaker Simon Verhoeven, 100 Pro, Men in the City 1 & 2, Friend Request, Welcome to Germany, and Nightlife, and a producer on the Milli Vanilli doc. Produced by Quirin Berg, Max Wiedemann, Kirstin Winkler. This initially opened in Germany in December last year before anywhere else. Vertical will release Girl You Know It's True in select US theaters starting on August 9th, 2024. Who's in?

Milli Vanilli's rise onto the '80s music scene is making its way to the big screen.

PEOPLE has the exclusive first trailer for Girl You Know It’s True, the biopic that, according to a press release, tracks the "meteoric rise and tabloid-fueled fall" of the R&B duo, written and directed by Simon Verhoeven.

Milli Vanilli's Fabrice Morvan and Rob Pilatus found success with songs like “Girl You Know It’s True” and “Blame It on the Rain." However, it was eventually revealed that the two stars were not the vocalists on any of Milli Vanilli’s songs, and were instead lip-syncing to the voices of other artists. (The Recording Academy revoked their best new artist Grammy win.)

In the film, Tijan Njie plays Pilatus and Elan Ben Ali plays Morvan. Matthias Schweighöfer portrays music producer Frank Farian, and the cast also includes Graham Rogers and Bella Dayne.

Morvan, 58, served as a consultant and co-producer on the project, while Pilatus, who died in 1998 at age 33, is represented by sister Carmen Pilatus on the associate producer team, plus Milli Vanilli’s former assistant Todd Headlee and Ingrid “Milli” Segieth.

The actual singers behind Milli Vanilli’s vocals were John Davis and Brad Howell; Howell is an associate producer on the movie, as is Jasmin Davis, daughter of the other late singer.

“We are excited to release this film that delves into the true story behind the success and controversy surrounding Milli Vanilli’s legacy," Tony Piantedosi, the SVP of acquisitions for the film's distributor, Vertical, said in a statement.
