In upstate New York in the 1850s, Abigail begins a new year on the farm where she lives with her husband, Dyer. As Abigail thinks about the year to come through her diary entries, we observe the striking contrast between her deliberate, impassive manner and her complex, unraveling emotions. Spring arrives and Abigail meets Tallie, an emotionally forthright and attractive newcomer who rents a neighboring farm with her husband, Finney.
