How to Install OpenMW and Start Modding Morrowind (2024)! - NipplezDaClown - Easy Installation Guide

Installation Steps:

1. Backup Game Saves
- Go to Documents, My Games, OpenMW or Morrowind
2. Back up the game file: (Just in case you need to start over or just want the default game file in addition.) - This is the Morrowind Main Folder.
- Go to: This PC, Disk (C:), Program Files (x86)
- If using Steam, go to: Steam, steamapps, common
- Copy this file and name it 'Morrowind - Backup'
3. Head to the Open MW Website here: https://openmw.org/
4. Click Downloads
5. Click Download from GitHub
6. Scroll down and click the OpenMW (version #) .exe to download. For Mac or Linux installers are available.
7. Open your Download folder and run the .exe
8. Accept Changes to Device
9. Run through the installer
10. When selecting the spot to install (browse), navigate to your game folder:
- Go to: This PC, Disk (C:), Program Files (x86)
- If using Steam, go to: Steam, steamapps, common
- Select the Morrowind Folder you wish to Mod
11. Check the box to Run after finishing.
12. Click Finish

BOOM you can start Modding!!!

Modding: is very simple and intuitive despite what many people believe! 99% of the time you just have to extract the mod into the Morrowind 'Data Files' folder and let the folders and areas overwrite. Other times, you will need to look through the zip file for a specific folder to extract or you will have to drop the folder in 'textures' or 'sounds' or such similar files.

Today, we are installing Morrowind Enhanced Textures (MET).

13. Go to the Morrowind Enhanced Textures page.
14. Click Manual
15. Click Slow Download
16. Open up the extracted file to the textures folder
17. Extract into the Morrowind Data Files here:
- Go to: This PC, Disk (C:), Program Files (x86)
- If using Steam, go to: Steam, steamapps, common, Morrowind (whichever folder), Data Files
- Let it overwrite any textures already modded in.
18. For this Mod, there are no ESPs or ESMs, so that's all you need to do. The textures have been updated at the root file.

For other Mods, sometimes you will have to open OpenMW (lol) and click the 'Data Files' tab. In the 'Content Files' tab you will select the Morrowind.esm and check off the mod .esp or .esm files you would like to play with. If these .esp an .esm do not appear, click the 'Data Directories' tab and click Append. Then, select the Morrowind main folder, check any boxes that appear, and accept. Now the .esp and .esm files should appear.
