Spicy, Sweet, or Tropical Treat: Customize Your Dream Mango Panna Cotta!
This recipe takes the classic Italian panna cotta and gives it a vibrant twist with the sunshine flavor of mangoes. But the beauty lies in the customization! Feel free to swap out the mango for other fruits, add a spicy kick, or embrace a tropical vibe.
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Chill Time: 4 hours (minimum)
Yield: 4-6 servings
Ingredients:
Base:
2 cups chopped ripe mango (or substitute with peaches, berries, pineapple, etc.)
1 cup heavy cream
1/2 cup milk
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1 vanilla bean, split and scraped
3 sheets of gelatin (or 1 1/2 tablespoons powdered gelatin)
Pinch of salt
Optional Customization Ideas:
Spicy: Add 1/2 teaspoon chili flakes and a squeeze of lime juice to the mango puree.
Tropical: Substitute mango with 1 1/2 cups passion fruit or lychee puree. Top with a dollop of coconut cream.
Berrylicious: Swap mango with 1 1/2 cups mixed berries. Drizzle with a simple syrup made with equal parts water and sugar, simmered and cooled.
Instructions:
Mango Mambo: Blend the chopped mango in a blender until smooth. Set aside for a tropical infusion later.
Creamy Dream Team: In a saucepan, heat the cream, milk, sugar, and vanilla bean pod over medium heat. Stir gently until the sugar dissolves, then bring to a simmer. Do not let it boil. Remove from heat.
The Gelatin Jiggle: In a small bowl, sprinkle the gelatin sheets with cold water and let them sit for 5 minutes to soften (if using powdered gelatin, follow package instructions for blooming). Once softened, whisk the gelatin into the warm cream mixture until fully dissolved.
Mango Magic: Strain the mango puree into the cream mixture and whisk it all together. Season with a pinch of salt for a flavor pop.
Pour and Chill: Divide the panna cotta mixture into individual serving cups, ramekins, or a mold. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or until completely set.
Customization Time!
Here's where the fun begins! Depending on your chosen customization, incorporate the following steps:
Spicy: Add the chili flakes and lime juice to the mango puree before whisking it into the cream mixture.
Tropical: Substitute the mango puree with passion fruit or lychee puree and top with coconut cream before chilling.
Berrylicious: Swap the mango puree with mixed berries, then drizzle with the cooled simple syrup once the panna cotta is set.
Serving Suggestions:
Garnish with fresh mango slices, mint leaves, or a sprinkle of chopped nuts.
Drizzle with a simple syrup or honey for extra sweetness.
Serve with a dollop of whipped cream for a decadent touch.
Tips:
For a vegan option, use plant-based milk and alternative gelatin substitute.
Leftovers can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days.
