On June 20, 2024, at approximately 10:18 p.m., the Chino Police Department received a 911 emergency call from a 12-year-old girl, saying her father, 43-year-old Jose Angel Mendoza, a resident of Chino, appeared to be assaulting her mother at the 12800 block of 10th Street. Due to the loud and excruciating cries for help heard both in the 911 call and by concerned neighbors throughout the complex, residents began rushing from their homes, as seen in the video footage. As the first police officer arrived, he saw adults and children frantically running away from Mendoza, stating that he had a knife.

The responding officer immediately took a position to place himself between the bystanders and Mendoza while attempting to de-escalate the situation. By speaking with Mendoza the officer saw a large knife sticking out of Mendoza's pocket. The officer gave Mendoza repeated clear commands not to grab the knife. The officer then told Mendoza that if he pulled the knife, he would be shot. Mendoza failed to obey commands and pulled a large fillet knife out of his pocket. While holding the knife in a threatening manner, Mendoza advanced toward the officer, at which point an officer involved shooting occurred. Officers rendered emergency treatment to Mendoza until paramedics arrived to take over and provide additional care. Mendoza was transported to a local hospital by medical personnel where he succumbed to his injuries.
