Desires comes from the Greek word hēdonē, a term that means simply pleasure, but which often carries the negative connotations of sinful, self-indulgent pleasure, BTW we get our word hedonism from it. It consistently has this negative meaning in the NT (LUK 8:14; TIT 3:3; 2PET 2:13).
But the point James is making is that if covetous zeal goes unrestrained, it can go too far and the danger of actual violence is real, as we can see today throughout the world.
Asking for and praying for things that are in the plan of GOD is contrary to what the sin nature of man desires. Man wants to satisfy his own lust his own zealous pursuit of hedone hedonism. The sad thing is that we know as Christians that the things of GOD, the gifts of GOD are perfect, and they come with the contentment, the peace of GOD Shalom.
Adulteresses is a description of spiritual unfaithfulness used in the OT and it would have been familiar to James’s Jewish readers (HOS 9:1). James has in view professing Christians, outwardly citing or claiming to be, but in any event they were having a tough time shaking loose of the worldly lusts and other problems like controlling the tongue.
