You can disinfect your drinking water with chemicals like Aquatab tablets and Clorox bleach. A 2% tincture of iodine works too. The Sawyer Mini is a solid water filter when you set it up inline on a CamelBak bladder system. But remember, water filters are useless if they freeze in cold weather. The Grayl filter is an easy, all-in-one solution, but it has its downsides. CamelBaks and other water bladder systems are convenient but can leak or burst. Boiling water is the best way to disinfect, but you'll need a fire for that, which isn't always practical.

You can only survive about three days without water. Your access to water depends on your location. Are you in a desert, or are you in a forest with plenty of creeks, lakes, and rivers? All humans and animals need water, making watering holes risky places, especially in non-permissive environments.

Water is heavy. It's one of the heaviest parts of your gear next to your weapon and ammo. A standard 1-quart military canteen weighs about two pounds.

Think about how you'll carry your water containers and where you can refill them. There are many variables to consider, but at the end of the day, the fact remains: NO WATER. NO LIFE.
