The Dead Sea Scrolls are a collection of ancient Jewish texts that were discovered in the mid-20th century in the vicinity of the Dead Sea, near the ancient settlement of Qumran, in what is now the West Bank. The scrolls date back to the Second Temple period, roughly between the 2nd century BCE and the 1st century CE.

The story of the Dead Sea Scrolls begins in 1947 when a young Bedouin shepherd accidentally stumbled upon a cave containing clay jars. Inside these jars were ancient scrolls, which turned out to be some of the oldest biblical manuscripts ever found. Over the next decade, archaeologists and Bedouin explorers discovered several more caves in the region, eventually totaling 11 caves with thousands of scroll fragments and artifacts.
