Kotaku Senior Editor Alyssa Mercante is under fire for her tasteless jokes about the attempted assassination of President Donald Trump. In a series of now-deleted posts on X, Mercante mocked the serious event, sparking outrage online.

In one post, Mercante shared a photo of a Stormtrooper with the caption, “Trump shooter revealed,” making light of a tragic situation. She followed this up with another tweet referencing the Fallout video game's targeting system, writing, “He didn’t use VATS!” Her continued amusement was evident when she replied to another user’s similar joke with, “Lmao I LITERWLLU tweeted this.”

Mercante’s attempt to backtrack included deleting the posts and tweeting, “Please be safe in the coming weeks! No one is being normal! DM me if you need anything!” However, she later reposted the Stormtrooper image and questioned, “Why did someone report this lmao,” showing her disbelief and indifference to the backlash.

She defended her actions by pointing out other global issues, stating, “Yes the tweets kept getting reported and piled on so I deleted them, no I don’t think someone dying is funny, yes I do think the uproar over this is interesting considering how many dead Palestinians there are, or how many mass shootings have been shrugged away, or how Tr*mp himself has called for violence and made fun of an assassination attempt, and his supporters stormed the capitol.”

Public reaction has been overwhelmingly negative, with many criticizing Mercante for making light of such a serious event. This incident raises questions about the ethical responsibilities of journalists and editors in their public communications, especially when dealing with sensitive political events.

Mercante’s history of controversial behavior, including personal attacks and harassment, further undermines her credibility and professionalism. Her actions not only tarnish her personal reputation but also that of Kotaku. The community’s patience is wearing thin, and this may be the final straw.
