A recent report reveals that Ubisoft's booth for Assassin’s Creed Shadows at Japan Expo struggled with low attendance throughout the weekend.

User rc_166 shared photos from the event on July 12th, noting, “The Assassin’s Creed Shadows booth was noticeably quiet compared to the crowded others. Chairs were used more for resting than engaging with the game. Is the lack of excitement spreading even to the French audience?”

Former World of Warcraft Team Lead Mark Kern, known as Grummz, chimed in, highlighting further concerns from sources on-site. He remarked, “Ubisoft’s mistakes are mounting, with the Assassin’s Creed booth nearly deserted at Japan Expo amidst bustling alternatives. It seems even French attendees aren’t thrilled about this game.”

On July 14th, Kern added, “Reports from Japan Expo indicate Ubisoft staff urging attendees at the Assassin’s Creed: Shadows booth to face their screens instead of using chairs to view the more popular Nintendo exhibit nearby. The lack of interest is palpable.”

In another post, he showcased a photo of the booth featuring supposed ‘exclusive gameplay,’ which turned out to be a recycled YouTube video. Kern noted, “Attendees staying till the end were rewarded with a bag of goodies, including a replica katana mistakenly identified as One Piece’s Sandai Kitetsu, raising eyebrows.”

Amidst these controversies, Japanese users accused Ubisoft of cultural appropriation, particularly for featuring items like the octagonal lantern from Todaiji Temple without permission. This backlash compounds earlier issues, including Ubisoft Japan’s apology for using the Sekigahara Teppo Corps’ flag in promotional materials without consent.

Ubisoft faces mounting criticism for its portrayal of feudal Japan in Assassin’s Creed Shadows, especially regarding historical accuracy and cultural respect. Gamers worldwide are voicing concerns, prompting calls to cancel the game and intensifying pressure on Ubisoft to address these issues.

Stay tuned for more updates on the fallout surrounding Assassin’s Creed Shadows and Ubisoft's responses to the community uproar.
