Metro Nashville police have released bodycam video after an officer and a murder suspect were injured in a shooting in Madison on Monday afternoon.

MNPD said Detective Carlos Diaz continues to recover after being shot in the leg by Miqueal Williams at an apartment complex on Skyline Ridge Drive.

Police said the shooting happened when officers were attempting to arrest Williams for a first-degree murder indictment. Williams, 31, was shot in the hip during the exchange of gunfire with officers, MNPD said.

The body camera video shows multiple undercover officers who went to the apartment complex after getting a tip Williams was visiting a friend who lived there, police said. When they saw Williams and a woman walking from a breezeway into a car, they surrounded it and ordered the woman to step away. That’s when police said Williams jumped out of the passenger seat, pulled out a pistol, and opened fire.

Officers returned fire and were able to get Williams to drop his gun while lying on the ground, police said.

Both Diaz and Williams are recovering from non-life-threatening injuries at Skyline Medical Center. Williams was indicted for the March 4 fatal shooting of 32-year-old Samuel Edwards Jr. at an apartment complex on Buena Vista Pike. A criminal court judge set a $1 million bond on the murder indictment.

“This individual had killed someone and had no regard for life,” MNPD Chief John Drake said. “It’s serious. Officers are passionate about what they do, and they want our community to be safe. It’s the same people (committing these crimes) over and over, it seems.”
