War of the Worlds is a 2005 American science fiction action-thriller film directed by Steven Spielberg and written by Josh Friedman and David Koepp. The movie is loosely based on H.G. Wells’ 1898 novel of the same name.

The film stars Tom Cruise as Ray Ferrier, a divorced father who must look after his two children, Rachel (Dakota Fanning) and Robbie (Justin Chatwin), when a global alien invasion occurs. The story takes place in modern-day New Jersey and follows Ray’s desperate attempts to protect his children and reunite them with their mother, Mary Ann (Miranda Otto), as the world descends into chaos.
