47. The Spaldings following the Whitman Massacre
6 months ago
47
Following the catastrophe commonly called the "Whitman Massacre," Henry and Eliza Spalding were forced to move to the west coast near Fort Vancouver because of fears of further violence. The Spaldings opposed this move, but were not in a position to overrule it. For the next several years they served in a variety of Christian and government roles, although Eliza died within just a few years. Henry Spalding was delighted to return to the Nez Perce years later, and find that the Christian ministry he had begun had continued to flourish. His later years were marked by significant service to not only the Nez Perce, but the Spokanes and other tribes of the Inland Northwest. This lecture covers this last chapter of the career of the Spaldings.
