US Fears that Russian counterspace weapons might target further satellites

According to the US Space Command, the Russian satellite launched last week is a weapon designed to target other low-Earth orbit spacecraft.
In an interview with journalists, an official from the United States Space Command stated that Russia "deployed this new counterspace weapon into the same orbit as a US government satellite."
Pentagon Press Secretary Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder asserted, "We have observed nominal activity and assess it is likely a counterspace weapon presumably capable of attacking other satellites in low Earth orbit."

In low Earth orbit, at least nine satellites are being deployed in this manner, one of which is COSMOS 2576, a spacecraft classified as a Russian military "inspector" spacecraft. On May 16, the Russian Soyuz rocket launched several satellites into orbit from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome.
Per Bart Hendrickx, a veteran observer following Russia's space program, "this mix of military and civilian payloads was totally unexpected. Never seen that before on a Russian launch,"
An American official with access to the intelligence material clarified that US services had planned for COSMOS 2576's launch and had notified allies of their evaluation of the satellite prior to its spaceflight.
According to the US intelligence analysis, COSMOS 2576 bore similarities to Russian anti-satellite payloads that were previously deployed in 2019 and 2022.
Sergey Ryabkov, the deputy foreign minister of Russia, dismissed the Pentagon's assertions as false information. He told reporters, "I don't think we should be responding to every fake coming from Washington."
"Launches of spacecraft for various purposes, including those that solve the issues of strengthening our defense capabilities" are part of the Russian space program, which is progressing "smoothly," according to the ambassador.
Moscow "consistently opposes the deployment of strike weapons in low-Earth orbit," he reaffirmed.
"Russia's policy [on the issue] will not change, no matter what the Americans say," Ryabkov emphasized.
"It would have reconsidered its destructive approach" and embraced Russia's suggestion "to develop a treaty on the prevention of an arms race in outer space" if the US truly desired to secure security in space, he said.
